First, please compare and contrast Content-Based Instruction adn Task-Based Instruction in terms of theoretical principles, teaching objective, classroom procedures, the role of the teacher, the role of students, and instructional materials. Then discuss the implications and applications of these two teaching approaches for teaching English to children in Taiwan. (96台北教育大學)

Both Content-Based Instruction(CBI)and Task-Based Instruction(TBI)are the byproducts of Communicative Learning Teaching(CLT)whose goal is to enhance students' communicative competence. The objective of CBI is to let students use English to learn subject courses; TBI, on the other hand, students work as a team to finish a task with English. There are no fixed procedures for CBI and TBI because they correspond to the various teaching objectives. Teachers in CBI are double-experts in the subject matters and target language. Teachers in TBI, on the contrary, select the suitable tasks and monitor the students' learning process. Learners in CBI become autonomous so that they are awareness of their own learning process. As for the learners in TBI, they are participants, actively involving the learning process with their co-workers. Both of the instructional materials are authentic and related to the real world, which enhance students' motivation.
Children who do not reach the formal operational stage are unable to handle abstract usage and focus mainly on here-and-now concept. Children in CBI and TBI classroom, subconsciously learning the linguistic codes, put of primary notice on the authentic content or fulfillment of the task which enlarge students' attention span and arouse learning interests.
